I have joined Subhasmita, Sujatha and Anjana to do a theme based post every month. This month, Jyothi Rajesh joined as well. Let us know if you want to join. The more the merrier:) I have never met them but we love talking about food and photography. After all, we are linked by our favorite subject: “Food.”
This month we decided on a “beverage” theme. For me, it is like gossiping with my girlfriends over a glass of mango lassi. When I was growing up, mom used to serve it to guests only during summer months. Visitors would get hot tea or coffee in the winter. She embargoed me from her conversations and usually sent me to do my homework or play with her friends’ kids (if they were bringing any). During our exam months, because all moms used to be busy with their children, they would continue their chit-chat over telephone.
I am in Boston now. I have one girlfriend from school and about four or five friends from my grad school at Buffalo. I am super busy with work and blogging, and they are busy with their chores. It’s too hard to find time to meet. Thanks to WhatsApp, iMessage and Facebook Messenger we are all connected.
Believe me, I used to not be much of a tech person, I always preferred meeting people personally. I wish I had some time for that.
Weekdays are crazy busy at work and home. Weekends are more active thanks to my cooking and madness for photography. It was bone-chilling cold in Boston. Now, thanks to daylight savings, there is more daylight and Boston is getting warmer. I will probably grab a drink with my girlfriends some time soon. Before I do that, why don’t I grab a drink with my friends in the virtual world? Cheers!!
This drink is not my invention. Last year, when our friends Chris and Joe visited, they brought mango lassi and mixed it with vanilla vodka. My husband loved it. So this year, I decided to make him a mango lassi martini. Since I do not drink I enjoyed the Lassi without the alcohol.
We Bengalis are fussy about mangoes. My husband calls me a mango snob because I do not consider the Mexican mangoes real. During summer months Calcutta gets its own special variety: “Langra”, “Alfanso” and many others . I do not have the words to explain how they taste. I never found the Mexican ones as delicious.
I used organic vanilla flavored yogurt. If you have a hard time finding it, you can use regular yogurt with vanilla essence and with sugar.
If you cannot get fresh mangos you can use the frozen kind.
Ingredients
Instructions
1. In a mixer add mangoes, yogurt, milk, sugar and cardamom. Blend it until smooth and set it aside in a pitcher. You do no need to strain it.
2. Add ground nutmeg and cinnamon.
3. In a cocktail shaker, add ice, vodka and the mango lassi. Shake well.
4. Strain into martini glasses.
My goodness, loved the mood you set while reading through this post. And the clicks …. muah 🙂
Thank you <3
I love mango lassi! This is wonderful, with or without the alcohol, I am sure.
I can so relate to being a mango snob. I terribly miss the Alphonsos, Bangnapalli and Salem mangoes that I grew up eating!
Me too Anjana 🙁
